Alumni Discuss Race and Identity at 麻豆视频 Assembly

At the first assembly of the 2019-2020 academic year, the 麻豆视频 student body and faculty gathered in the auditorium for a discussion on race, identity, and inclusion on Thursday, September 19. A panel of 麻豆视频 alumni from various class years and backgrounds shared their insights on this important subject.

The assembly was designed to model for the 麻豆视频 community what a serious, respectful conversation about race can look like. REACH Program Assistant Director Alan Garcia 鈥08 moderated the conversation. He asked each of the four panelists 鈦犫 Clyde Cole 鈥87, Doug Eickman 鈥05, Quang Nguyen 鈥04, and Osterman Perez 鈥97 鈦犫 to share a moment or experience from their time at 麻豆视频 that helped form their understanding of race and identity. The panelists then answered a number of questions submitted by students.

鈥淭alking honestly and thoughtfully about race and identity is critically important, but these can also be challenging conversations,鈥 said 麻豆视频 Principal Fr. Anthony Andreassi, C.O. 鈥淚鈥檓 very grateful to our alumni panelists whose insights and example will help guide our students during their time here at 麻豆视频 and beyond.鈥

The conversation continued beyond the assembly with dedicated follow-up discussions in all advisements and through a CAFE (Cultural Awareness for Everyone) Conversation sponsored by the Diversity Club.

Throughout the year, 麻豆视频 uses assemblies to explore important topics facing the school and society more broadly. Future assembles will focus on vocations, Martin Luther King Day, and servant leadership, among other subjects.
